FAQ

Q. Can I just come and ride/rent a horse?

No. JDV does not do pony rides. Rides are for those interested in taking lessons.

Q. Can I come and trail ride at JDV?

No. In order to maintain a peaceful facility, our trails are accessible only to  JDV clients and students. We also do not host family or group trail rides.

Q. What equipment will I need for lessons?

You will need a water bottle, jeans or breeches, boots with a heel and
minimal tread, and an ASTM-SEI approved equestrian helmet. Bike helmets are
prohibited. School helmets are provided for your first/introductory lesson, and if you continue you will be expected to purchase on of your own.

Q. Are clients/boarders expected to be in a lesson or training program?

We encourage all of our clients/boarders to continue their
horsemanship education through one of our lesson or training programs. With horses you can never stop learning!

Q. Can I take lessons at JDV if I do not own a horse?

Yes, JDV offers personal instruction programs on our
school horses.

Q. Can I trailer in for lessons if I do not board my horse at JDV?

Yes

Q. What disciplines (style of riding) do you teach?

Our areas of expertise include “English” ie. Hunter/Jumper, and Dressage. We do not teach any of the Western Disaplines.

Q. What are your hours?

We try our best to be flexible, so please call and we will find a time that
works for you. Please realize that after school hours and Saturdays can be
very busy, so spaces may be limited. On our current winter schedule lessons are Wed, Thursday and Friday afternoons, and Saturday/Sundays.

Q. Is there an age limit for students?

We teach students ages 4 through adult.

Q. What if the weather is bad?

Unless you receive a call, your lesson will not be cancelled. We have the
facilities to teach ground as well as mounted lessons, and we encourage
students to understand that there is more to horsemanship than simply
riding. Ground lessons will also occasionally be integrated into the lesson
program even without foul weather if the instructor deems necessary, and
cover everything from equine management skills to show grooming to basic
veterinary care.

Q. Can I show?

JDV is for both recreational and competitive students. If you are
interested in showing, talk to your instructor and he/she will help you
decide if showing is for you. We compete at local schooling shows as well as
A-rated shows. Please inquire about specific showing costs/fees.

Q. Can I show a school horse?

School horses are available for students to show, but please keep in mind
that you may not be able to compete at every show if you are using a school
horse as everyone deserves to get a chance to get out in the ring when they
are ready, and our horses can only do so much. If you are planning on
competing frequently and at higher levels, we can help you find a horse to
lease or purchase.

Q: I have been taking lessons for years and would like to jump higher, where
can I go to find a school horse that is more "advanced" that I can do more
on?

A: Not many places offer horses that are advanced to people who just want to
take lessons. School horses are very valuable to riding programs and are
usually very good at teaching riders the basics safely. When a school horse
is pushed to go higher they can break down either physically, or mentally.
No riding program can take that chance.

Q. Are clients/boarders expected to be in a lesson or training program?

We encourage all of our clients/boarders to continue their
horsemanship education through one of our lesson or training programs.
